"Tulpan"

(Directed by Sergei Dvortsevoy/Germany/Kazakhstan/Russia/2008)
With Tolepbergen Baisakalov, Ondas Besikbasov, Samal Esljamova

A young sailor, Asa, returns home from the navy and faces difficulties establishing his own place in the world. Living in very close quarters with his sister’s family, domestic tensions erupt — but to become a shepherd and achieve his dream of having a flock and hut of his own, Asa must first convince the family of Tulpan, the only available girl for miles, to accept his offer of marriage, a task that proves more challenging than it first appears. This bumpy courtship transports us (via some pretty wacky vehicles) through the stark and desolate plains of the region with humor and suspense, and allows us an intimate view into the harsh challenges and simple joys of being a nomadic shepherd on the arid Hunger Steppe. Winner of the 2008 Cannes Film Festival Un Certain Regard award, “Tulpan” is a sweet and delicate film that will open your eyes, and heart, to another world altogether. In Kazakh and Russian with English subtitles.
