THIS WEEK AT THE CINEMATHEQUE BY Dianna Braginton-Smith
"Antichrist"

A Taste of Lars Von Trier

Antichrist
Directed by Lars von Trier / Denmark / 2009 / 109mins. With Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg

“Antichrist” is a disturbing, dark, richly symbolic, true art film, that is also a true horror film – a combination Von Trier felt explored new territory.

A grieving couple, (Willam Defoe and Charlottte Gainsburg) retreat to their cabin in the woods hoping to resolve emotional damage over the recent tragic, accidental death of their young son. Defoe, a therapist, takes it upon himself to unwind his wife's paralyzing emotional and pshychologocal trauma by visiting the woods she fears most. Once there, a nightmarishly bizarre, graphically violent and terrifying rollercoaster of horror ensues, brutally unfolding itself in four “chapters."
Friday, Dec. 4 through Tuesday Dec. 8 at 7 and 9:15 p.m.

Artist Reception
The films and Photographs of Alex Nahon

For the last decade, Alex Nahon, French artist and filmmaker, has exhibited his photos and film-installations in some of the most prestigious art shows in the U.S. and Europe. In addition to his art work, Nahon has written, directed, acted in and produced fiction short-films, documentaries, music videos and commercials. As an actor, he played in Julie Delpy's “Two Days in Paris” in 2007, and he will return in the role of Manu in the sequel, “Two Days in New York.” He recently directed a film portrait of Swedish singer Lykke Li, which eventually became a music video for her song “This Trumpet In My Mind.” Nahon is currently living in NYC, working on his first feature film as a writer/director, “Don't Shoot the Piano Player,” based on the David Goodis novel.

Join four artists for the video short compilation: “Parts of a Room.”

Belaxis Buil, Jeffrey Delannoy, Milcho and Douglas Voisin (each representing a line that completes a box, or in this case a room) were asked to create a video based on their individual concept of space and environment. The artists selected work with video and photography but are deeply influenced by other disciplines such as dance, music, and performance. Each artist was assigned a chapter to the concept. Discussions on details were not to be shared and the end result is a video short compilation that completes a story line.
Thursday Dec. 3 from 7 to 11 p.m.

The Miami Beach Cinematheque is located at 512 Espanola Way, Miami Beach.
